点评:It’s true that I’m an aficionado of US presidents, but I loved Campobello! Touring the “cottage” where the Roosevelts spent many happy, leisurely summers was special. The docents describe family life, island traditions, and outside visitors remarkably well and knowledgably answer questions. (I noted that the docents were clear that President Roosevelt contracted polio at a Boy Scout camp in New York, even though his first symptoms manifested at Campobello.) The restoration of the grounds seems accurate, and the Hubbard House next door is interesting too. We especially enjoyed lunch on the back porch of the Prince Café, and the “Eleanor’s Tea” experience was incomparable. The two historians’ presentations about Eleanor Roosevelt and her political prowess were even better than those delicious ginger molasses cookies! The exhibits in the visitor center are very good, and the ones describing the historic partnership between the US and Canada are particularly timely. Including an afternoon detour to Mulholland Lighthouse and Head Harbour Lighthouse (where we saw dolphins and a minke whale), we spent a full day on Campobello Island. I have only one regret. I read that the Park periodically offers “FDR Happy Hour” in homage to Roosevelt’s “Children’s Hour” at the White House. I so wish it were offered daily, as “Eleanor’s Tea” is. I would’ve loved to have heard a couple historians discuss FDR, his politics, the WPA, SSA, and the war years as capably as the two that discussed Eleanor’s life and accomplishments.
