The lake is so wide that the edges seem to disappear into the distance. Its color changes with the weather—on sunny days it turns a clear, bright blue, while on cloudy days it takes on a softer gray tone. On one side, the Cangshan Mountains stretch quietly along the horizon. There is very little transition between the mountains and the water, and the view feels simple and remarkably clean.
The road around Erhai is perfect for cycling. Along the way, you pass small villages, farmland, little docks, and a few lakeside cafés. In the early morning, you might see people jogging along the shore, and in the evening, others sitting on the rocks just looking out at the water. There aren’t many complicated attractions here. Most people come simply to watch the lake, look at the sky, and feel the breeze.
I was staying near the lake, so I went back again the next morning. The air by the water was still a little cool, and the sun was just beginning to rise. The surface of the lake looked especially bright. Occasionally a boat would pass by, leaving faint ripples behind. I stood there for a while without doing anything in particular, just staring at the water. There wasn’t any strong emotion in that moment—just a quiet sense of comfort.
