点评:This was my third tour with Vagabond Tours and my second time doing the Wild Irish Rover Tour. I first did this tour on my own three years ago, and this year I decided to bring my nine-year-old son along. And I can honestly say: if your child enjoys walking, is reasonably fit and happy to join in with the activities, this tour can work wonderfully with a children.
My son had an absolutely fantastic time. Our guide, Ronan, and the entire group made him feel genuinely welcome from the very beginning. Everyone was relaxed, kind and inclusive, and by the end of the trip he had become so attached to the group that he really missed everyone afterwards.
One of the things I love most about Vagabond is that even if you book the same tour twice, it does not really feel like the same tour. So much depends on the weather, the conditions and the activities that are possible on a particular day, as well as the little stops along the way. Of course, some places will be familiar, but they are places I am very happy to return to. I was actually looking forward to seeing some of them again – Gougane Barra, Dingle and Connemara, for example. They are simply beautiful, no matter how many times you visit.
Our guide Ronan deserves a special mention. He was absolutely brilliant: knowledgeable, funny, caring and full of fascinating stories and information. He paid attention to the wellbeing of everyone in the group and was especially great with my son. He is also simply a very interesting and warm person to spend time with, and he contributed enormously to making this trip so memorable.
We were also very lucky with our group, mostly guests from the US and Australia. Everyone got along incredibly well, and it was just a lovely group of people to travel with.
The accommodation overall was good, and the food – even in some of the more mid-range hotels – was excellent. There was only one real disappointment: at the hotel near the optional Skellig Islands excursion, our room was directly above the pub and it was extremely noisy until late at night. Sleeping was almost impossible, which was particularly difficult for my nine-year-old after long, active days. That is definitely something I would hope could be avoided for families in the future.
One thing I noticed when travelling with a child – although this is absolutely not a criticism of Vagabond, but rather something I experienced throughout Ireland – is the lack of healthier options on children’s menus. Chicken goujons, fish and chips, fries and pasta seem to be everywhere. It would be wonderful to see more vegetables, raw vegetables, salads and simply prepared meat or other nutritious choices for children. In the end, I regularly bought extra fruit and healthier food in supermarkets for my son. Again, this is an observation about travelling in Ireland with a child rather than about Vagabond itself.
And then there is the Vagabond vehicle – one of the biggest reasons I love travelling this way. I would personally never choose to explore Ireland on a large coach. The smaller Vagabond busses can travel along narrow Irish roads and get to places that large tour buses simply cannot reach. Some of the most memorable places are down tiny roads, off the beaten track or seemingly in the middle of nowhere – and that is exactly where you want to be in Ireland.
If I could make one suggestion for future itineraries, I would personally love even more of the lesser-known cliff walks and slightly less time at the major tourist attractions. Of course I understand why places such as the Cliffs of Moher or Rock of Cashel are included, especially for first-time visitors. But walks such as the Kilkee Cliffs are, for me, much more enjoyable and feel far more special. Ireland has so many spectacular coastal walks away from the busiest tourist sites, and I would happily spend more time discovering those.
Overall, though, this was another wonderful Vagabond experience. It was active, beautiful, personal, fun and full of memorable moments. Most importantly, my son loved it every bit as much as I had hoped he would.
In fact, one of the first things he asked me afterwards was:
“Mum, when are we going with Vagabond again – and which tour are we doing next year?”
I think that says it all.
Third Vagabond tour completed – and certainly not the last.
