The Check-in for international ferries is not at the port

点评：Taking an international ferry (in our case Superfast to Greece) is somewhat confusing, as you have to check in at the "office" in via Einaudi before going to the actual ferry terminal at the port.
We were instructed at the time of reservation to be "at the port" at least 3 hours prior to departure "for check-in". The thing is: our hotel was at the port - check-in wasn't. No amount of asking whether we could check in sooner (maybe even the night before) and then go to the port/ferry terminal directly from the hotel yielded any results. The answer remained "be at the port at least 3 hours prior to departure for check-in - yes, foot passengers, too".
Not the port's fault, but I'll put this here in case it helps someone:
We stayed at the Seaport Hotel (recommended!) and were booked on the 4pm ferry.
You have to check in at the office in Via Einaudi, which is the opposite direction to the actual ferry terminal from the SeaPort hotel. There's a bus operating between the two places, but it's easily walkable.
The important thing to know: At check-in, you're not entering any restricted areas. You just go there to present your passport and receive your paper ticket (yes, even if you did a web check-in, no way around it). You can then go back to your hotel/the city/have lunch etc and leisurely start making your way towards the ferry terminal once the ferry arrives (factor in another passport control and a security screening at the terminal).
We had breakfast, checked out of the hotel, stored the bags with them, walked to Via Einaudi for check-in (which was open at 11am for the 4pm departure, no crowds at all). Went back to the city center for some shopping, had drinks back at the hotel and, when the ferry arrived at around 2pm, grabbed our bags and leisurely made our way to the ferry terminal.
It was completely relaxed and I wish we had known for sure this was possible beforehand!
