A real gem – fascinating, beautifully maintained and well worth a visit

点评：Top marks for the KwaZulu-Natal Museum. I really enjoyed our visit and would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Pietermaritzburg.
The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, and the museum itself is a beautiful building. Everything is very well maintained and the collections are clearly looked after with great care. I particularly liked that, as you walk around, you can see ongoing renovation and restoration work taking place. It shows that there is a real commitment to preserving the building and its collections for the future.
There is an incredible amount to see. The museum covers the history of South Africa and KwaZulu-Natal, natural history, mammals and other wildlife, archaeology, fossils and geology, Zulu culture and heritage, early settlement, and the history of the Indian community in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal. There are also fascinating displays of birds, insects, shells and marine life.
For me, one of the great things about the museum was the variety. You can be looking at ancient fossils one minute and then find yourself looking at something much more recent and familiar. I particularly enjoyed the old telephones and everyday objects – there was quite a bit that brought back memories and a real sense of nostalgia.
The recreated period interiors were also excellent. I particularly loved the recreation of a wealthy Pietermaritzburg resident’s house. It gives you a real feel for how people lived and what life was like in another era. The recreated street scenes and shops add to that feeling of stepping back in time.
One of my favourite exhibits was the old Toyota HiAce taxi. You can actually sit inside it and watch a documentary about the history of South Africa. I thought that was a brilliant way of presenting history and something a bit different from the usual museum experience.
What impressed me most overall was that the museum manages to bring together the natural, cultural and human history of South Africa in one place. There is something for everyone, and you don’t need to be a serious museum enthusiast to enjoy it.
It is obvious that a lot of care goes into preserving this place and keeping it relevant, and the friendly staff make the experience even better.
A really enjoyable visit and one of the highlights of our time in Pietermaritzburg. Definitely worth putting on your list if you’re in the area. Interactive for kids (World Cup football room also).
