点评:We spent an hour walking to this place from where the taxi dropped us off.
This Japanese house was interesting and worth an hour. The guides were charming, elegant in traditional dress and really delightful. We spoke to at least four of them and they were genuinely gracious and thankful that we came to explore and the fact we came from Ireland seemed to thrill them a great deal.
It was a cold day in Niigata nevertheless shoes had to be left at the front door entrance - non negotiable. The house structure is wooden, two storeys, narrow steep stairs and some quite large rooms. The walls are very fine and there's not much sound proofing nor heat retention within. Give me bricks, mortar and a great heating system any day.
The gardens and pond were extensive too. They had footwear available to wear to go around the gardens but I'm afraid fitting UK side 11 tootsies into them was punishing. I'd imagine if you are uk size 7 or above you'll find it tough going.
The gardens were tastefully planted and furnished, running water interrupted the silence in an enchanting way with plump gold fish effortlessly idling in the pond.
Worth visiting if you are nearby and it's not only foreign tourists who go as there were a lot of young Japanese folk just as curious as us.
