Good instructors, good site, but terrible business practices
Fly Sussex Paragliding School-Day Classes的点评
18 months ago I went through the EP and CP courses with Fly Verbier(Great guys) in Switzerland. We completed everything but 4 skills which we were unable to finish due to weather. The unfinished skills were reverse launching, ground handling, accelerator systems, and soaring. I felt comfortable enough in my skills to fly on my own and traveled around flying in Germany and Austria for a few months, always stopping by the local clubs to ask advice and inform them that I was a beginner. It all went great and I learned a lot from the pilots I met, but I got annoyed at being denied entry to some gondolas because I lacked certification(Austria is quite strict) so I decided to complete my certification, even though I despise certifications.
I knew I wanted somewhere with low hills so I could practice lots of take-offs and landings. I wrote to places in Turkey, Spain, and the UK. All except for Fly Sussex said that they would first have to check my competency first since I had been out of my last training for more than a few months. Since I just wanted the certification as quickly as possible I leaned towards Fly Sussex. I wrote to them explaining my needs and asking if I could knock out my 4 skills. They said that it wouldn't be a problem. I then asked if I should pay for the hourly instruction or a course and the response was that since I needed 5 soaring flights it would be better if I paid for the full CP course and if I finished in fewer days I could use the rest of the time towards the CP progression course. Since they are the school and should know scheduling best I agreed.
I next asked about the best dates to visit with the best chances of flying since I would be taking a week vacation and flying six and a half hours to attend. I just got a vague answer that the weather there is unreliable but that they do try to fly every day. I then asked specifically about 11-19 August. The response was "We do have spaces then but it is a bit too early to know what the weather will be like then". This would be a fine response if the other schools and pilots I wrote to in the area hadn't said that those dates are always too windy to fly. The other schools in the area even close for August. So with this knowledge what Fly Sussex wrote to me is a lie. I should have chosen a different school at this point but instead decided to attend the first week of October.
When I did show up for the first day of training they didn't know who I was. I didn't have a check-off book ready for me and everything was very rushed and last minute. Out at the site it was exactly what I had wanted. Small hills to get a lot of practice, but straightaway I was just stuck in the normal CP course with no adjustments made for my needs. I did exactly what every other student did. At the end of the day the instructor signed off in my book things I had already been checked-off on. They had no idea(or didn't care) what I was there for. I was just another generic CP student. My complaints stating that I wanted to be trained on my four needed skills fell on deaf ears. They only wanted to keep the whole CP course together, so there was no way I was ever going to be able to finish early and start the CP progression course. Another lie.
We had two good flying days out of the week I was there. Plenty of time to complete my four required skills IF they had actually focused on what I told them I wanted. Instead I didn't get a single item I needed checked off! When I complained afterwards asking for a refund the response I kept getting was "if only the weather had been better", but the weather doesn't come into it. I wasn't able to complete my training because they failed in doing what we had agreed upon. I suppose I still have 3 training days I could use with them but why would I spend $5,000 again to attend a place that cannot fulfill their business obligations?
I cannot get my money back, but hopefully I can get you to choose a different school.
