点评:Tucked away near Fisherman’s Wharf is a rare spot that isn’t trying to sell you a sourdough bread or a plastic sea lion. I had no idea this place even existed (shame on me for not consulting TripAdvisor)—probably because I moved away 30 years ago. I popped in just to use the facilities, but next thing I knew, I was fully absorbed in the exhibits.
This National Maritime Museum Visitor Center ended up being one of the most memorable stops on my trip (it is part of a complex of several buildings that include the Maritime Museum). I enjoy history, that is not a requirement to appreciate this place. There’s plenty of fascinating information about the harbor, the ships, and how the city came to be. I, skipped the deep dive into ship mechanics—purely due to personal disinterest and not because the museum failed to make them exciting. Even so, I easily spent an hour wandering through this visitor center, picking up just enough trivia to impress (or annoy) my friends at dinner later.
A solid stop if you need a break from the Wharf’s chaos— or to clear your mind after one too many encounters with golden gate miniatures and cable car T-shirts.
