PUBLIC SAFETY WARNING – uSHAKA MARINE WORLD, DURBAN
I am sharing my experience because I believe the public, visitors and Durban Tourism need to be aware of what happened to me.
On Saturday, 25 July 2026, at approximately 3:30 PM, I was robbed of my iPhone 17 Pro Max at the public pick-up and drop-off area at uShaka Marine World, Durban.
This happened at a particularly busy time of the day, when people were leaving the attraction, waiting for Ubers and other transport, and gathering around the pick-up/drop-off zone.
After I was robbed, I walked back to the area and desperately asked the security personnel for help. I was extremely distressed and was calling and screaming for assistance.
What has stayed with me most is that, when I asked the security personnel for help, I felt that my situation was not taken seriously. A security officer simply smiled at me while I was asking for assistance. As someone who had just been robbed, I found this extremely upsetting.
The security company involved is Vusa Isizwe Security. I have also been communicating with Mr M Zondi from Vusa Isizwe Security regarding this matter.
I have also been communicating with Mr JP Kriel, the Security and Parking Manager at uShaka Marine World, regarding the incident.
There is also video/CCTV footage available from the area, which I believe should be properly reviewed to establish exactly what happened, what was visible at the time, and how the security response unfolded.
There were also many children and families in the area at the time. This makes the situation particularly concerning because a criminal incident in a busy public area could potentially expose other visitors, including children, to danger.
I understand that security cannot prevent every theft from happening. However, when a visitor has just been robbed, is visibly distressed and is actively asking security for help, I believe there should be an immediate and appropriate response.
🚨 DURBAN TOURISM NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS
I believe Durban Tourism should be made aware of this incident.
uShaka Marine World is a major tourist attraction visited by people from South Africa and around the world. Visitors should be able to feel reasonably safe when visiting a major tourist destination, particularly in busy areas where people are waiting for transport.
This is not only about my stolen iPhone 17 Pro Max.
It is about visitor safety, security response, accountability and the reputation of Durban as a tourist destination.
People from other provinces and other countries come to Durban expecting to enjoy our attractions. When a visitor is robbed and then feels that their request for assistance is not taken seriously, this can negatively affect their experience and their perception of Durban.
📌 INCIDENT DETAILS
Date: 25 July 2026
Approximate time: 3:30 PM
Location: uShaka Marine World public pick-up/drop-off area, Durban
Stolen item: iPhone 17 Pro Max
SAPS Case Number: 161/7/2026
Security company: Vusa Isizwe Security
Mr M Zondi: Vusa Isizwe Security
Mr JP Kriel: Security and Parking Manager, uShaka Marine World
I am speaking to the relevant people regarding this matter and have raised my concerns about what happened.
I believe the available CCTV/video footage should be reviewed, and that the security response should be properly assessed.
I am sharing my experience so that other visitors can remain vigilant, protect their belongings and be particularly careful in busy pick-up and drop-off areas.
The question I believe needs to be answered is:
If a visitor is robbed at a busy tourist attraction, walks back asking security for help, is visibly distressed and is screaming for assistance, what should that visitor reasonably expect from the security personnel on duty?
And with so many children, families and touristspresent, how quickly could a situation like this potentially become more serious?
I believe uShaka Marine World, Vusa Isizwe Security and Durban Tourism should take these concerns seriously.
This is about awareness, accountability and making Durban a safer and more welcoming destination for everyone — including visitors from other provinces and international tourists.

Vusa Isizwe Security
