点评：Just off one of Akasaka’s busy avenues, almost hidden behind the steady flow of traffic and office buildings, lies Toyokawa Inari Tokyo Betsuin.
What makes this temple unique are the hundreds of fox statues — the Inari foxes — scattered throughout the grounds. They line the pathways, guard the altars, and gather in dense clusters that seem to watch you from every angle. Some are small and weathered, others more imposing, but together they create a mystical, almost otherworldly atmosphere. Walking among them feels slightly surreal, as if you’ve wandered into a space where the spiritual and symbolic are vividly alive.
The temple grounds themselves are awash with colour. Hundreds of bright red banners flutter in the breeze, while rows of red lanterns line the earthen walls, casting a warm glow that deepens the sense of place. The repetition of red — bold, vibrant, and unmistakable — gives the complex an energy that is both dramatic and devotional.
When I visited, it was noticeably busy, with what seemed to be an even mix of locals and tourists. Yet despite the steady stream of visitors, the temple retained a sense of focus and reverence.
