点评:One of the best museums I have ever experienced. Note I said “experienced” rather than visited.
I knew nothing about the Geechee community in the Low Country, and this museum is made from a former Geechee crab catching/cleaning operation. It was grueling, tedious work, done with pride and stamina by the families of former slaves. We stood in the actual facility, and the docents were so skilled, I felt like I was back in time, watching the actual workers.
The docents had grandparents who actually worked at the facility, and spoke about their family with deep respect. We learned a lot about the strict, cohesive community and how children were raised.
We also got a demonstration of Geechee rhythmic church singing (shouting) and learned a few Gullah (dialect of the Geechee) words.
My only regret is that I didn’t buy anything from the tiny gift shop - it would have been another way to support this wonderful, wonderful museum.
