点评:The free castle carpark ( which only really holds a few cars ) is found up a rough, bumpy , stony track off the A941 - and from there it’s just a short walk amongst lovely rural surroundings up to the castle.
Situated dramatically on top of a hill surrounded by rolling fields & moorland , this lonely 15th century ruin of an L- Plan tower castle was once an impressive stronghold of first the Ogilvy family, and then the Gordons. It’s thought to have been built by Thomas Cochrane, a close advisor to King James lll.
Unfortunately, it was attacked and burned in 1571 , as an act of revenge by William Mackintosh, who was beheaded for his crime.
By 1725 it lay derelict, and as often happens , stones were removed from the castle, and used in other nearby buildings.
However, despite it’s romantically dilapidated condition, it’s well worth visiting to fire up the imagination, and admire the wonderful remote location and landscape of this fortress.
