点评：The Veli Rat Lighthouse is a major landmark that all Croatians are proud of. Built in 1849 by the Austrian-Hungarians, it opened up Zadar to international navigation. It survived WWI, WWII and the Domovinski rat in the 1990s. It has always been manned and is operated by 2 families today. In fact, it is the last manned lighthouse in Croatia today.
It has a EUR 5 entry price for adults and is free for below 18 year olds. The climb is straight to the top. There are no landings to stop on. The view from the top makes it all worth it as it is spectacular and goes on for miles. You’ll see the best of Dalmatia from this viewpoint.
We stayed for 30 minutes including the climb and descent. It was ample time. Nice to stand there and contemplate.
The lighthouse keepers grow and sell their own tomatoes, cucumber and capsicum. They are delicious. It’s nice to eat food grown in season, in the ground all under the suns watchful gaze. So much nicer than hydroponic, hothouse grown stuff.
At the base, hanging from a tree, is a nice swing. Also, there are 2 good beaches within 50 metres. One is good for snorkelling and the other for swimming. Plus, there is the usual array for beach bars and restaurants.
All-in-all, it is a nice place to visit
