点评:The cemetery began operations in 1847. Records show that burials took place from 1848 in the vicinity of the old cemetery, however the first official burial of the trust was dated May 20, 1856.
The site covers seven hectares and, situated in the centre, stands the original rotunda built in 1893. This was used as a meeting place prior to burial services, and has been restored to its original splendour over the years.
There are formal gates at the front and a parking area exists, although it's not formalised. A rose memorial garden exists just inside those formal gates. There is also a sign nearby that mentions an ANZAC heritage walk.
I noticed that many headstones had the words 'just sleeping'... and isn't that a lovely thought - eternal sleep. For instance Annie Ross fell asleep in November of 1945, and John Griffiths who fell asleep in May 1906.And a tribute is offered to John from the children of Illabarook School.
A lovely headstone exists for Henry Fern who died in 1908 and his wife, Virtue died in 1920.
Algie Blight lost his life in the Sunshine Railway Disaster on the 21st April in 1908... he was only 22 years old. The Sunshine rail disaster occurred on 20 April 1908 at the junction at Sunshine railway station when a Melbourne-bound train from Bendigo collided with the rear of a train from Ballarat. 44 people were killed and over 400 injured, almost all of them from the Ballarat train, as the Bendigo train was cushioned by its two locomotives.
There is also a Eureka Diggers Memorial worth going to look at. The monument's plaque says, "This monument and the enclosing fence were erected Anno Domini MDCCCLXXIX by the Government of Victoria at the request of the citizens of Ballarat.
The light was fading and the headstones became harder for me to read... it was a lovely evening to wander around but with the uneven areas of ground, probably not the safest without a torch. This cemetery is well worth visiting.
