Searching for Small Less Touristy European Cities

点评：Having traveled quite a bit around southern Europe, I have begun searching for small cities that are less touristy, hence less crowded and less expensive. This particular trip I went to Almeria Spain on the southern coast with a population of 200K and 2-5 hours from other major cities by bus. Almería was for centuries a most important port on the Mediterranean, but now it is a sleepy little city with wonderful museums (mostly free admission), terrific eateries, and affordable hotels, but is trying to become a tourist attraction. Situated right on the Med, Almeria is surrounded by mountains and deserts that provide a nearly constant dry breeze allaying any humidity from the ocean. I stayed at Hotel La Perla on Plaza Del Carmen, about a 15 minute walk to the seashore and on the local bus route. This hotel is certainly a pearl, situated perfectly at the edge of the old town and the new town, with a wonderful local folks tapas bar, Super Bock, just 3 doors down. A family owned business open from about 12:30 to 2:30 daily, this tapas bar specialty is fresh batter fried seafood. The custom at Super Bock, along with other tapas bars there, you buy a beer, glass of wine, or cocktail, and you get a tapa of your choice for 4 Euros. Over 10 days I got to sample their entire offerings. Be aware, there is no menu, you just have to ask what is available and look around to see what the locals have on their plate. The fresh batter fried sardines, fresh batter fried shrimp, and fresh batter fried fish filet were my favorites, served with some french fries and fried green pepper strips. Try Almeria, Hotel La Perla and Super Bock. You won't be disappointed.
