A treasure trove of building designs using timber
科尔玛老城的点评
点评：Colmar old town was a fairy-tale precinct with extremely beautiful half-timber buildings. These structures of varying sizes had lot of character. Steep roofs with attic and dormer windows were adding great style to the buildings. We experienced cozy environment inside these dwellings with a nice warm atmosphere while the outside temperature was almost at zero degree. The wooden beams even though rustic were very decorative. They were set in various patterns giving each house an individual character. While walking along the narrow cobble stone roads it was interesting to observe these wooden patterns in the old architectural design. We saw X forms, curule, slanting or diagonal, V and inverted V, Mann form, Cross and diamond (Lozenge), simple vertical beams etc. Having an interest to these designs it was a treasure trove to us. Roof of buildings were decorative too with flat tiles presumably made of clay in the shape of a curved ending. We learnt that it is the shape of a beaver’s tail or “Biberschwanz”. Early morning the roofs were coated with a thin layer of frost like adding an icing to the beauty, which melted away with the sun gradually warming the surface.
Old town had some fine restaurants and we very much enjoyed the crepes in little Venice that were made while we watched. The market hall was an interesting place with some eateries, cheesery, baked products, vegetables, fruits, processed meat, souvenir sellers and other vendors.
The Lauch River or canal enhanced the beauty of Little Venice. We immersed in the beauty of these houses and the surroundings of the canal.
