点评:The Grote Markt in Nijmegen is the very heart of the city centre. In the Second World War this is the place that miraculously survived the American mistake bombings of february 1944. The city centre was completely devastated but the Waag and other buildings on the Grote Markt survived the bombing with relatively low damage. On the Grote Markt you find most buildings going back to late Medieval times. The medieval Sint Stevenskerk behind the Waag was severely damaged because of the bombings but has been restored magnificently. Nowadays the Grote Markt is a vibrant collection of cafes, bars, restaurants, hotels and terraces. Especially in july during the Four Days Marches and Zomerfeesten this is a place with music and laughter where thousands of people get together and celebrate. In the Grote Markt one also finds the statue of Mariken van Nieumeghen, a famous character in one of the most important books/plays of the Middle Ages.
