Standing at the Erebuni Archaeological Center, I was standing at the beginning of everything.
Founded in 782 BC by King Argishti I of Urartu, Erebuni is not just an ancient fortress. It is the birthplace of Yerevan. Nearly 2,800 years ago, this hilltop was chosen for its strength, its view, and its spirit. Today, the stone walls, cuneiform inscriptions, and wine cellars carved into rock still speak of a civilization that understood both power and beauty.
What makes Erebuni profound is the silence. From the walls you can see all of modern Yerevan spread below, with Mount Ararat watching in the distance. It’s a place where past and present meet without words. You walk on stones laid by hands from the 8th century BC, and in the same breath you see the city those hands dreamed into existence.
The museum inside holds treasures — bronze artifacts, pottery, and the famous cuneiform tablet declaring the city’s foundation. But the real treasure is standing outside. Feeling the wind, touching the ancient stone, and understanding that you are in one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on earth.
