Frank Lloyd Wright at Florida Southern College的点评
点评：We're travel writers (covering the Discover Small Town America beat) and love everything Frank Lloyd Wright. We've seen/been in his extraordinary architectural gems in Bentonville Arkansas, Racine Wisconsin, Scottsdale Arizona, etc.
We've had Florida Southern College, known for its Frank Lloyd Wright-designed campus, on our travel bucket list for years. Finally went there today. WHAT A MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT!
While the college touts its connection to FLW ("Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL, hosts the world’s largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, featuring 13 completed structures.") it is almost impossible to determine where the famous architect's structures are there.
We strolled the campus looking for signage and found none. We asked security staff for directions and they weren't able to help us. We stopped in the college library and asked the librarian. She didn't know where to send us. She gave us a campus map and guess what? It contained NO MENTION of the 13 FLW buildings. We then asked a student we saw if she knew where we could find his work and, luckily, she pointed out the nearby chapel. She also directed us to the nearby FLW visitor's center. Surely folks there would help us. NOPE.
The staff there said we could sign up for a guided tour at $35 a person. We really don't like guided tours, preferring instead to wander destinations like this at our own pace. I asked if they had a handout that would help us discover his work on our own. Yup, they had a simple little, tri-fold brochure WE COULD BUY FOR FIVE DOLLARS. 😱 No thanks.
After traveling tens of thousands of miles across the country exploring and reporting on some really exciting places, we can honestly say we've NEVER experienced such an unwelcoming, inviting tourist destination that seems like it wants to keep the attractions they promote online a big secret.
