The Joanina Library is spectacular

点评：The University of Coimbra is situated at the top of the steep hill on which Coimbra is built. As such we were grateful that we took a taxi from the station to the University on arrival. We had booked tickets on line, and if you want to see the Joanina Library (the highlight of the university) then you should do the same as entry is by strictly timed entry. The three main sites are on the historic university square and are the Chapel of St Michael, a small chapel with lovely tiled walls and baroque altars. Secondly the Royal Palace which offers great views over Coimbra, but also views of the main hall of the university. Thirdly you see the library on three levels, in the basement the University jail, then the store of books that are not in the main library and finally the three rooms of the main library with baroque decoration, which is really spectacular. You get 10 minutes here, and no photography is allowed.
After viewing the main historic area you can visit the lecture theatres for physics and chemistry as well as the Curiosity cabinet displaying natural curiosities as they would have been displayed 200 years ago.
