Great time had by all!
Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome with Mess Cafe的点评
点评：Visited the airfield as a member of a group. Had pre- booked a tour as well as an afternoon tea.
Met by our guide, Suzannah, who was absolutely fantastic!! She focuses a lot on the social history aspect of the time in which the airfield was operational ( WW1). She told us some wonderful stories about the pilots who had worked there- and sadly died. She really brought them to life – talking about their lives and the fact that staff were still in contact with family members even today – and had invited them to attend various memorial services and events – wonderful!
She talked about how the war had changed life for many people –in a positive way as well- including women – the start of women’s emancipation as they worked in the munitions factory and other services on site. As well as the social history aspect, she knew a lot about the planes on display (even though she said she was not a technical person!). Very passionate and enthusiastic about her role– we really couldn’t have had a better guide!
We visited some of the old buildings that have been restored with interesting displays, a museum,(wonderful!) and some great artefacts. We rounded our visit off with a lovely cream tea with home-made scones. The.Mess cafe has a great menu – all home cooked food (including Sunday dinners starting soon!) And happy to cater for any dietary requirements.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I came on the visit, but I’m very glad that we did! A true hidden gem. The staff worked tirelessly to raise funds to restore the buildings and keep the memories alive.
They run various events through the year and we certainly will return. Very much worth a visit – and a great time was had by all!
