On Saturday evening of Easter weekend, Wild Waters Mombasa opened its gates to an ensuing roar of a headlining crowd that was definitely looking forward to this experience. The Fisherman Experience stage has remained diverse since its inception. At its debut in Mombasa, the sheer variety of music on offer could still knock even a seasoned Coster Ojwang and experience-goer back a bit.
Hosted by Gabiro and Captain Otoyo with DJ interludes by Nik, this night featured Mombasa based Partraw, rising Nyatiti player Maka Mugenda and legend weaverbird Osogo Winyo on the same stage in quick succession. He still exuded an enviable degree of cool as he reeled off his greatest hits in the furnace-like heat.
The visionary behind The Fisherman Experience, Coster Ojwang, received an immense audience and a rapturous reception. The gig then splits into individual showcases featuring Serro, Shad Muziki, Okello Max and Yaba. The transitions between the solo spots with time are smoothly done.
The performances are so kinetic and zesty and expansive. From this experience, it is easy to see why The Fisherman Experience has endured in Nairobi and Kisumu – that crisp, fresh delivery, that unceasing hunger and energy, but also the evolution.
Mombasa gets its first The Fisherman experience – and the audience limps home happy.
