Turtle Island: A highlight of any visit to Sabah
海龟岛的点评
点评：The one day / one night trip to see the turtle on Selingan Turtle Island is an unforgettable experience. It was quite emotional watching close-up a turtle lay her eggs, then see those eggs removed and buried in a safe hatchery. Finally there was the moving sight of turtle hatchlings being let loose on the beach and heading for the sea (and probably an instant death by predators). But obviously enough turtles make it through the gauntlet and grow up to be adult turtles and return to the island to give birth.
Obviously this is never going to be a luxury experience; the small island could not accommodate any extras it is dedicated to turtles.
The visit starts at the waterfront in Sandakan where guests board fast motor boats. There is no toilet or any other facilities on the boat and the trip takes about an hour.
Landing at Turtle Island is on the beach so you need to be prepared to carry your luggage up to the accommodation. You should leave any luggage you don’t need for the night in Sandakan. The cabins on the island are small, basic but comfortable. There is air-conditioning but not hot water. The buffet food served is adequate but hardly anything to get excited about. The lack of options underscores how remote the island is.
Whilst waiting for the evening when the turtles arrive you can go to the beach (with an armed police watch). The snorkelling off the beach seemed to be overrated and you can no longer hire snorkelling gear on the island. Once the turtles start arriving the dedication of the rangers becomes apparent. On the night we were there they collected 1400 eggs from 21 turtles and released 950 hatchlings.
If you go expecting to rough it a bit for one night then the experience of seeing the turtles will make it well worth the effort.
