点评:Whether you want to get to the lake's shore or board a boat to tour around it, this is the only path to the lake's surface. Unfortunately, it is closed until 2028 as the NPS rebuilds the path, and while the trail will be missed, the most unfortunate part of the next 3 years is no access to the lake. However, when it does reopen, this will be a "Must See" attraction to get to the lake.
We visited Crater Lake with two other couples and despite some of the trauma caused by its return up, this was one of our favorite activities in the park. The water is cold but amazingly clear and here you can wade into it as this shore is one of the only shallow parts to the lake. Again, our boat tour and swim in the lake were two of our favorite experiences in the park.
As for the trail itself, it is a mile down and more importantly a mile back up with 613 feet of elevation gain. If you hike often, those numbers are hardly intimidating. However, as the only access to the lake, many people hike this trail that don't hike other vertical stretches which is why you see all the traumatic comments. Be honest with yourself before you go and pace accordingly. Looking at my photos, it took us 28 minutes to hike down and 26 minutes to hike up. We took too many pictures going down and we exited the lake with rumbling thunder nearby. I hike often and the return hike was not that bad other than the thunder in the distance.
My only negative is not the hike up, but the fact that the trail and more importantly, the parking are so crowded since this is the only place you can access the lake. Please understand this also when you visit. We were not able to park in the adjacent lot but rather on the side of the road further up the hill. Start planning for 2028, because it truly is amazing to actually access the lake and this is the only place to do it.
