点评：The town of Hveragerdi, 28 miles from Reykjavik, sits on the site of geothermal springs. Boiling water runs just beneath the surface of the ground, leading to many hot springs from and in the nearby hills. This is both a blessing for the town and a curse. As a blessing, it allows greenhouses to flourish, as they can be provided with heat throughout the year thus allowing fruits and vegetables, flowers and herbs to be grown here year long. The boiling water also allows food to be cooked simply by burying it for a few hours, providing the restaurants in the area with unique menus. The curse of this geothermal water is that hot springs opening overnight in people’s kitchens, bedrooms and living rooms are very common.
Also, due to the Mid-Atlantic rift that runs through Iceland, many earthquakes hit Hveragerði. Fortunately, the houses are built here to withstand tremors, but there is a lingering knowledge that a powerful earthquake or eruption, due any day now, could cause serious or irreparable damage to the settlement.
A circular walk around the hot springs and steaming vents, where one could soak one's feet in a steam bath, brings one back to the entrance/exit.
The exit serves as a café, museum explaining the geology of the area and a greenhouse where tomatoes, cucumbers, banana plants, flowers and other tropical items are grown.
Anna's hot spring, Önnuhver in Hveragerði, was so named as this small fumarole was used by locals to dump their garbage. During the earthquake of 1947 a huge explosion in the hot spring caused the villagers' garbage to be flung all over the town; some of the items thrown out are now on display in the greenhouse area.
