Nice place, bad experience
Gracanica Monastery的点评
点评：Admission is free and the monastery itself is just glorious. But I’m rating this for overall experience. I would have wanted to know more about the history of the place and was waiting patiently for it, but it didn’t happen. That, however, is not the issue. While I was inside, tagging with the group being entertained by the guy who works there and giving the tour of the place, i touched a wall. I did so because I didn’t see anywhere that says you cannot and i’ve seen others do it. Some religious (it seemed) were even kissing the frescos with lipstick on. I was immediately reprimanded by said guy when he saw me do it. A moment later as he was very animatedly explaining to the others, he “slapped” the wall. I felt such an outsider and I know I am, and I can understand if the privilege is reserved to those practicing the belief, but his reason for reprimanding me was that i might have something in my skin that could corrode the structure. Meanwhile he is tapping the walls way much harder than i did that the entire experience just didn’t sit well with me.
I also came armed with some preparation and came with the acceptable dress code to show respect. I was also prepared to pay for the guide as I was really interested in learning more. i was also encouraged and intended to give some donations as one other reviewer suggested as the admission in itself was free. But after the rude experience, any intention went down the drain for me. I was really confused about this and confided to some friends why this might be, and they all suggested the same thing i suspected. I truly felt that the unreasonable rudeness was fuelled more by racism than anything else. I didn’t want to jump into this myself even if that’s how i already truly felt at that time. Maybe it would have been avoided if i was in a group instead of being alone. The monastery is worth seeing, but not enough to be treated so poorly.
