点评:The end of 2025 was a memorable time for me because I got to spend my university break with my family by visiting Koto Gadang, Agam, West Sumatra. Located not far from Bukittinggi, Koto Gadang is quite easy to reach, making it a convenient destination for a family trip. As someone who grew up in West Sumatra, this journey felt like an opportunity to rediscover a place that I had always considered familiar. Yet, when experienced from a tourism perspective, I realized that it holds many stories and attractions worth exploring.
One of the main highlights of the trip was, of course, Ngarai Sianok (Sianok Canyon). The scenery alone is a good reason to visit. The towering cliffs, lush greenery, trees, and wide valley create an atmosphere that is both peaceful and breathtaking. It is no surprise that Ngarai Sianok has become one of the popular tourist destinations in the area. In 2024, the Taman Panorama Ngarai Sianok and Lobang Jepang area recorded around 604,000 visits in a year.
After enjoying the views of Ngarai Sianok, we continued our journey to Janjang Saribu. For me, this place was interesting not only because of its scenery but also because of the history behind its steps. Janjang Saribu was originally used by local communities as a route connecting Koto Gadang with the area around Ngarai Sianok. It was once known as Janjang Batuang because bamboo was used as part of its structure. Despite its name meaning “a thousand steps,” it does not actually have exactly one thousand steps. Still, walking along the path can be quite a workout, especially as it follows the natural contours of the canyon.
What I enjoyed most was the scenery along the way. From several points, we could see Ngarai Sianok from different perspectives, surrounded by green trees and the atmosphere of the countryside. The experience at Janjang Saribu was therefore more than simply “coming, taking pictures, and leaving.” It felt like a walk through nature while also getting a glimpse of how local communities have interacted with and made use of their surroundings throughout history.
Of course, a trip to West Sumatra would not feel complete without trying its local cuisine. While visiting the Ngarai Sianok area, my family and I had the chance to try *pangek itiak lado hijau*, a traditional duck dish cooked with green chili and rich spices. The flavor was savory, spicy, and full of aromatic spices—definitely something that suited my taste. As we say in Minang, “lamak bana!*, which simply means “very delicious!”
Overall, my trip to Koto Gadang and Ngarai Sianok offered a wonderful combination of nature, history, culture, and local cuisine. What makes destinations like this even more memorable is that we do not only get to admire beautiful scenery, but also discover the stories behind it. For families, friends, or travelers looking to experience West Sumatra at a more relaxed pace, I would definitely recommend adding Koto Gadang, Ngarai Sianok, and Janjang Saribu to your itinerary. Give yourself enough time to explore, because these places are not only beautiful to photograph—they are also worth taking the time to experience.
