Spend £50 and receive free gift very misleading. Clarify with staff before parting with cash!

Popped into the shop recently and saw the spend £50 and receive a free gift. Excellent I thought as it is not difficult to spend that amount so free gifts here I come as I intended to buy several presents. However, despite spending a not inconsiderable amount the number of freebies did not match the vast fortune that I had expended. When I asked about this was given some incomprehensible explanation that certain items bought together only counted. As this was neither explained on entry or made clear at the till this left a sour taste in my mouth.
Either make £50 spent on any purchase count or have the staff explain the silly overcomplex system to every customer.
First negative experience that I have had in this shop. Hopefully management response to this post will clarify. Otherwise, check the overcomplex system with staff before parting with vast amounts of cash
