点评:Five days on the Lower Salmon with Salmon Raft, and we’re already planning to book again. Skilled guides, phenomenal food, a river full of wildlife and history, and a crew who clearly loves what they do. Zero training needed, gear provided, no detail overlooked.
We spent five days getting to know a wonderful group of people we never would have met otherwise: four families of four, plus my husband (Mike) and me. Unless you book as a group, you won’t know who else will be on your trip, but it worked out beautifully for us.
The guides know what they’re doing. Our guides - Lilli, Aniese, Justin, Milo, and Lauren - handled every small mishap and logistical curveball with zero fuss. They read the raft compositions as well as the rapids: conservative lines with young kids aboard, and splashy fun when people wanted it (like the time Lilli ran part of a rapid backwards so the back of the raft could get soaked too). They were thoughtful about how our rafting groups assembled day to day to balance fun and safety, including kid-only rafts on several days so parents got quality time of their own. Duckies were managed expertly and safely, even with little kids in them, and they called the shots on when it was safe to jump in.
The Lower Salmon is worth seeing with guides who know it well. It features sandy beaches, dramatic canyons, and plentiful wildlife: bald eagles, great blue herons, bighorn sheep, and a river otter that surprised us after lunch one day, plus stretches of real, quiet tranquility. We stopped at Nez Perce pictographs and the Cooper’s Ferry archaeological site. Lauren grew up rafting this river (her mom SUPs the entire thing!), and Milo, who is studying geology, could identify the rock formations we passed. Our swamper, Eli, kept everything running behind the scenes with a smile the whole time. Every guide conveyed that they genuinely wanted to be there.
When we passed other rafts, we observed a lot of silence. On ours, there was real conversation and connection. Our guides spoke with pride about working for Lauren and Chris Demo, who own the company, hire on personality as much as skill, and pay their swampers. The crew hangs out together on their downtime, and it shows on the water.
You don’t need to train for this. I’m out of shape and did zero physical prep, and it still didn’t matter. Most boats are center-seat, so guides do the paddling; the one paddle boat just needs a few paddlers (and can support a kids-only crew), with strong paddlers needed only on Class IV days. Mike, who is almost 60, a big guy, and not particularly agile, fully engaged and simply skipped the hikes, cliff jumping, and slip-n-slide. They let us bring his camping chair, since standard ones aren’t built for someone his size, which made a real difference. If you can walk on uneven, sandy, rocky ground, you’re fit enough. Four or five days both work well; five means more river and more rapids.
The food is exceptional. Three meals a day plus appetizers and dessert, different every day. Mike’s mushroom allergy was handled flawlessly, with mushrooms triple-bagged and cooked separately to avoid cross-contamination. Picky eaters had build-your-own options at nearly every meal. As someone who enjoys cooking for a crowd, their production line genuinely impressed me.
Camp logistics are handled. Tents, pads, and sleeping bags provided; just bring a pillow. Guides set up and broke down camp daily and moved our bags on and off the gear raft. Rods and tackle are provided; you just need to have a fishing license. People fished constantly — on the raft, at camp, and at lunch — and plenty of fish were caught.
Pre-trip, Lauren Demo handled communication herself, with a detailed gear list and rapid responses to all of our questions. Compare the trip cost to four nights at a hotel with three meals and drinks daily, then add a crew setting up and breaking down camp for you every day. It’s a great value, and we’re already thinking about doing it again next year in early season instead of August - same river, a completely different experience with flows closer to 14k CFS instead of 4k.
