点评:If you absolutely must explore every nook and cranny of Castell de Peñíscola and know the full backstory, then by all means hire a guide, pay the entrance fee, and do the whole thing properly. Expensive, but delightful.
But if you’re perfectly happy to wander about at your own pace and simply admire the castle from the outside, just start heading uphill. It takes only a few minutes, and you’ll inevitably find yourself right at the foot of the fortress walls. Along the way you’ll pass the town’s lighthouse, and you’ll also spot the small church — or at least the square in front of it.
It’s easy, it’s free, and, as it turns out, there are still plenty of excellent photo opportunities. Especially in the late afternoon sun.

Bonus trivia
Castell de Peñíscola was built by the Knights Templar between 1294 and 1307, on top of an earlier Moorish fortress. Its Romanesque core dates from this period, but the castle was later expanded and adapted by Pope Benedict XIII (Papa Luna) in the 15th century, and once again during the Renaissance in the 16th century.
