July visit to the largest NWR in the Lower 48 limited to Corn Creek visitor center. No bighorn sheep but many birds

点评：We visited the Desert NWR on our drive from Las Vegas to Death Valley NP. Advertised as the largest NWR in the Lower 48 and famed for its population of bighorn sheep our visit was limited to the visitors’ center at Corn Creek. We had no expectation of seeing bighorn sheep so far down in the valley; we understood that to even have a chance of seeing them we would have to drive up to the eponymous Sheep Mountains. Limits of time and temperature (>100F) did not allow for that adventure.
We were looking for another fix of green vegetation amid the south Nevada desert and to hopefully find some avifauna, birding having now become an integral part of our visits to the natural world.
We did spot many birds but not too many species. These included Black-chinned hummingbird, Black-throated sparrow, Lucy’s warbler, Lesser goldfinch , Verdin, Violet-green swallow, Mourning dove, Indigo bunting, Ash-throated flycatcher, and Blue grosbeak.
We enjoyed the view of the Sheep Mountain range immediately to our north. To our south, across the valley, were the mountains of the Spring Mountains.
The spring-fed was a pleasure to walk through but we did enter the shady areas with much relief; even fairly early in the morning the July sun made for hot temps. Surrounded as we were by the Mojave desert it was quite the contrast to see flowing streams and relatively lush, green vegetation.
The only non-avian fauna we spotted was the Desert spiny lizard, on the side of the path, on fencing and up on in the trees. We could not spot the highly-endangered Pahrump poolfish in their tank.
