点评:For fans of Saint Paul (like me) visiting Saint Paul's pillar is an absolute must. When I went there in September the whole basilica area was a complete mess of road construction and actually finding the place was quite difficult. What you see is a relatively modern although attractive church built over the ruins of a 4th century basilica. You walk around the site on a series of raised walkways looking down at patchy mosaics and the rather confusing layout of the early church. We know from Acts 13: 4-12 that Saint Paul did visit Cyprus and visited Paphos, so it is quite possible that he may have visited this site before any of the buildings and ruins we now see were constructed. Whether he was actually whipped against the pillar which is labelled as Saint Paul's pillar is much more speculative. We do have evidence from the Bible that Paul was whipped and beaten because he says so in 2 Corinthians 11. But we don't have any evidence (except a local tradition) that he received 39 lashes against this particular pillar in Paphos. Sorry if this is a spoiler!
