Unfriendly, patronising, expensive, disappointing.

点评：We turned up as a Cornish family looking for an adventure somewhere slightly different. For sure it was different to the normal Cornish experience. Unfriendly and patronising staff failed to explain the exact nature of the 'diving centre' i.e. that even though we were not scuba diving, using any facilities aside from the sea itself, or having access to any equipment or in fact advice, we were subject to a £5 p/p fee. The parking fee of £3 is fine, normal for a privately owned access point. But as folks who live and explore widely in Cornwall, the idea of charging just to enter the water was a novel and bewildering experience. On the back foot and stood with two children, mad keen on snorkelling and desperate to enter the waters, we asked exactly what the fee covered and why. The younger of the two staff turned from her laptop and snapped 'it costs £90,000 to run this place' and turned back to her screen. Further baffled and upset, we were then told 'but we don't charge for children under 14'. This was only offered after several minutes despite being stood with two children from the outset. We decided to pay rather than drive elsewhere so £13 later, we tried our luck.
To compound the experience, the older woman at reception offered zero advice or explanation on where precisely to snorkel, info on tide (when best as was coming in) what we could hope to see, and how to explore the reef. One of our snorkels had a slightly broken mouthpiece, and next to us was a basket of snorkel tubes. When we asked how much it would be to purchase a 'tube' the older lady said' we don't sell them'. It was truly an Alice in wonderland moment. Curiouser and curiouser. Puzzled and exasperated, I took one of the 'snorkel tubes' over to request a price (none of them were labelled) 'Oh yes, we sell SNORKELS' she said. Hard going indeed!!!
Gutted to say that once we did enter the expensive waters, we saw nearly nothing. Probably because we weren't quite in the right area of the reef, as staff gave ZERO ADVICE on this. A couple of large fish were all we managed. Seen more in our hometown of St Ives off the causeway daily, or off PZ battery rocks for free, or any number of freely accessible and more beautiful locations than the dreaded Porthkerris. Notably, the staffs attitude and level of helpful service was entirely different to a gentleman who was staying in the camping field. 'Coldest beer on the Lizard and great pizzas' they raved. Unfortunately we were there to see the octopi, squid fish and other marvels that I am sure are prolific if you know where to look. We didn't. Honestly shocked at the cold and patronising attitude and lack of warmth and respect for people that is the norm in Kernow. Gutted and baffled. Maybe if you turn up with all the scuba gear, pay for caping, or look more kitted up, they treat you with more respect and offer advice, but for a local family, it was a massive and pointlessly expensive NO. At leats we brought our own food and drinks so we weren't further out of pocket.
Following day I checked in with a mate who grew up on the Lizard who said there never used to be a charge just to enter the sea. Considering asking for a refund as think we totally got duped and has left a horrid taste...
