点评：I’m just back from a brilliant time volunteering at VMF and have been thinking about why it was so good. I’ve done several volunteering holidays and this was right up there with the best. There’s much to speak about, not least the vervets who are fascinating, funny and full of sass, and having the opportunity to just observe them and their interactions with us and each other was such a privilege. There were a range of short and longer term volunteers when I was there, some really experienced and others less so, all were really wonderful people and all were 100% invested in the welfare of the monkeys. It felt like a proper team and was really welcoming. I was fortunate that there were some interesting/more unusual things happening when I was there, including the reintroduction of a young vervet into a troop which several of us were tasked with monitoring the progress of over the following days, plus a week of monkey vasectomies which we were invited to observe if we wished to. Both were fascinating. Even the early morning tasks which involved wrestling the bandit monkeys for papaya and corn, then cutting them into a range of sizes to feed the able and less able monkeys was fun, mainly down to the people I was working with and knowing that by doing it, we were ensuring the safety and wellbeing of 600+ monkeys who reside there. The human food which was fully vegan (in line with the ethics of VMF) was cooked by some of the longer term volunteers and was really good. The cabins in the volunteer village were also fine, and I often got my own personal alarm call in the morning as the monkeys woke and started playing on the roof. If you’re wondering about volunteering then I wholly recommend giving it a go. And I would definitely recommend giving it a go at VMF.
