点评:Average because it could be so much better with decent signage/descriptions. I’ve known this museum since I was a child and was interested to see the refurb, but visiting with someone who doesn’t know anything about Greenock I realised what a trick has been missed. This is a really interesting collection and in a town with really rich cultural history. I don’t think the museum reflects this.
There’s no chronology to the display, lots of cabinets lack descriptions and if you’re not from the area then the jump from ships to IBM might seem random. I think it needs more context particularly for forgeron visitors.
Why not have a map of the Clyde on the wall showing how critical that part of the river was as a hub for Glasgow and the Industrial Revolution and why (the depth the types of ships). They could even include something about the more recent increase of cruise lines and why these stop in Greenock for the same reasons. A map would also help people understand the relationship with some of the other towns mentioned. More narrative about the way the industries of the area developed would also help to tie the exhibitions together tell the story better. The international artefacts are so diverse but it’s disjointed- the natural history cabinets have a bit about one collector but it wasn’t clear how the museum came to have the other parts of the collection. Why not have a bit about the social history the great wealth that existed in the area and how this is reflected in the actual building and architecture around Greenock and surrounds. The art gallery is small but very nice although again I didn’t see much about how the collection came about.
I don’t know if there is a dedicated curator but I really think there are a few pretty low cost changes that would really make this museum so much more accessible and offer a more coherent visitor journey to allow visitors to go away with a much better understanding of why this collection exists and the history of the area.
