Goodwood but not good for the disabled!

点评：Overall, the Festival of Speed itself is an incredible event. The cars, demonstrations, atmosphere and organisation are all fantastic, and there is no denying that it is one of the best motoring events in the world.
Unfortunately, our experience as a family with disabled members left us feeling extremely disappointed.
We attended as a family of seven, including two disabled people, two companions and three children. One of the disabled members has significant mobility issues and relies on accessible viewing areas. While Goodwood does provide raised accessible platforms, there are simply not enough of them, and they fill up very quickly. There are also very few shaded areas around the site, making the day even more challenging for disabled visitors, particularly during warm weather.
What was most upsetting was how my wife was repeatedly approached by staff while using the accessible viewing platform. We fully understood that one member of our group who did not require the platform should move elsewhere, and we did so without any issue. However, staff continued to single my wife out despite her having a genuine mobility-related need to remain there. She was ultimately asked to leave the accessible viewing area without any justified reason, despite being exactly the type of person the facility exists to support. The way she was treated left her feeling embarrassed, humiliated and deeply upset. No disabled person should be made to feel unwelcome or as though they have to defend their disability simply for using an accessible facility.
To make matters worse, a number of wheelchair users would position themselves at the front of the platform and then stand up for long periods, blocking the view of seated disabled visitors behind them. This completely defeated the purpose of having an accessible viewing area for people who cannot stand. Staff appeared to do nothing to manage this situation.
After being asked to leave, my wife had no choice but to sit in a chair on the lower grassed area, where her view of the action was severely restricted. This was not by choice, but because she had been made to feel she could no longer remain in the accessible area despite having every right to be there.
I raised these concerns with Goodwood afterwards, but the response from Lindsey was equally disappointing. It was clear that the main issues I had raised had either not been read properly or had been ignored entirely. Rather than addressing the concerns about how disabled visitors were treated and how the accessible areas were managed, the response completely missed the point.
Goodwood clearly puts an enormous amount of effort into creating a world-class event, but its approach to accessibility falls well short of the standard it should be aiming for. Disabled visitors should not have to compete for limited spaces, repeatedly justify their need to use accessible facilities, or be asked to leave those facilities without good reason.
If you are disabled and rely on accessible seating or wheelchair viewing areas, I would seriously lower your expectations. The event itself is excellent, but based on our experience, accessibility and the treatment of disabled visitors are areas that Goodwood urgently needs to improve.
