An Unforgettable 8-Night Stay in the Heart of Boxley Valley

点评：AMAZING—that's the one word I would use to describe my 8-night stay with Buffalo Outdoor Center.
I stayed in the Valley Secret cabin for my first two nights and then moved to the Foxfire cabin for the remaining six nights.
Both cabins were spotlessly clean, exceptionally well maintained, and stocked with far more kitchen items than I expected. One small detail that really stood out: they had the largest, plushest towels I've ever experienced at a lodging property. That's saying something considering I spent more than 25 years in the hospitality industry with several major hotel brands.
The views from the Foxfire cabin are unforgettable, especially when a summer storm rolls across the valley. One day I intentionally stayed at the cabin from morning until evening, simply sitting on the balcony with a book, enjoying coffee in the morning and a glass of wine later in the day. The cool breeze, incredible scenery, and sounds of nature made for one of the most relaxing days I've had in years.
I visited Boxley Valley (July 11–19) as part of a wildlife and landscape photography road trip. The weather was mostly hot and humid, but the early morning fog created incredible opportunities for photographing landscapes, Americana, and wildlife. By midday, the fog usually lifted, although a light haze often remained. The lush summer vegetation was an almost unbelievable shade of green—it looked nearly surreal in many of my photographs.
Wildlife sightings naturally vary depending on the season, weather, and a little luck. During my stay, I photographed elk, deer, numerous bird species, small mammals, and countless scenic landscapes throughout the valley.
During my stay, I explored much of the surrounding area, including Jasper, Erbie, Harrison, Osage, Compton, Pruitt, and many of the backroads in between. The main paved highways throughout the region were generally in good condition. Many of the unpaved roads leading to popular destinations—such as Kyle's Landing and the Parker-Hickman Farmstead—are narrow and include washboard sections, potholes, and occasional rough terrain. I drove a Chevy Tahoe and still encountered a few moments where I decided the road wasn't worth attempting a second time. The paved road into Steel Creek also has some rough sections. Visitors should also be prepared for steep grades and tight switchbacks throughout the area, so make sure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition—especially the brakes.
The staff at the Buffalo Outdoor Center store were consistently friendly, welcoming, and happy to offer directions and suggestions for places to explore. The store carries a surprisingly good selection of basic groceries and personal care items. Prices are understandably higher because of the remote location ($6.99 for a small squeeze bottle of mayonnaise, for example), but it's convenient to have supplies available nearby. The café serves breakfast and lunch, and the sandwiches are excellent—large, fresh, and well worth the price.
Jasper is only a short drive away and has the nearest full-service grocery store (Harps), a Dollar General, gas stations, restaurants, and other essentials.
Cell phone coverage throughout Boxley Valley is extremely limited. My AT&T phone only displayed satellite SOS capability in most areas. Fortunately, the Wi-Fi at both cabins worked well, allowing me to make and receive Wi-Fi calls, send text messages, and stay connected when needed.
If you're looking for a peaceful getaway with spectacular scenery, abundant opportunities for wildlife and landscape photography, and a comfortable cabin to return to each evening, I highly recommend Buffalo Outdoor Center. Whether you spend your days hiking, photographing the Ozarks, floating the Buffalo National River, or simply relaxing on the porch while watching a storm roll across the valley, it's a destination that is well worth the trip. I would gladly stay there again on a future visit to the Arkansas Ozarks.
