点评:Lovers Walk is an odd name to give to what is in effect a series of, albeit pretty, tree lined footpaths, however I imagine in the right atmosphere/company, one could see this as a romantic place to be.
Lovers Walk is over 280 years old and is believed to be the oldest surviving example of a public pleasure ground - quite something, and definitely a feather in Matlock Bath's cap.
The walks are, give or take, three quarters of a mile in length and vary in their difficulty. Some, like the one my wife and I strolled and picnicked on with our young daughter, is flat and even, merely following the course of the Derwent, with lots of benches and rest stops (along with a play park) along the way
Others, which offshoot from the riparian one, are steep and tricky underfoot, as they wind their way into the woodland which broods down on the river all year round. These are not suitable for people with mobility/fitness issues, or who are simply not wearing appropriate footwear. Care is needed.
The more "off road" of the walks do afford you stunning views down into the Derwent Valley though, so it is worth doing, if you are able.
Access to the walks can be achieved by using Matlock Bath's Jubilee Bridge, or the footbridge further down at the Derwent Gardens. Prior to the building of these bridges, the Lovers Walks had to be accessed by a small ferry! No such service exists today - though there is a rowing boat hire business at the Derwent Gardens...
