点评:This place is well worth a visit. It must have once been a magnificent building but sadly it is gradually falling into disrepair. I won’t go into it’s history because you need to go and experience this, only to say that the servants quarters are now used as an orphanage for boys between the ages of 5 to 16 years of age.
The site was left in trust to the Sri Lankan government with the provision the it was used as an orphanage. The entrance fee goes to the orphanage so there is not a lot left for the upkeep of the actual house, so unfortunately the house is showing signs of wear and tear with parts of the property now being unsafe and consequently people are not able to be viewed.
Some of the artefacts of the house and its former owner are now in a museum in Colombo, but the house still has some treasures left, wood carvings, stain glass and an incredible staircase.
I would recommend a visit here, it’s not too far from Kalutara, just a ride in a tuktuk.
It’s a shame that as the Sri Lankan government are the trustees that they are not putting any money towards the upkeep and repair of this magnificent building. With the house in the state and the weather in Sri Lanka I wonder how much longer this building can survive. It would be such a shame to lose a place like this so visit it while you can.
