点评:We hiked to the Stuibenfall, Austria, in August 2023.
At over 500' tall (159m), Stuibenfall is one of Austria’s tallest and most impressive waterfalls. Like many visitors, we parked our car at the Bischofsplatz parking lot in Umhausen, just off the Niederthierstrasse. This same road continues past the parking lot to switchback up the mountain to the town of Niederthai (more on that later).
It's a short walk from Bischofsplatz to the rushing brook created by the waterfall, passing a small recreational lake and an archeological site. You'll know you're on the right path as the brook will always be on your left. It's a pretty, forested walk, but also steadily uphill. You cannot even see the waterfall most of the way.
There are 5 signposted viewpoints along the path, with the first 2 appearing near the base of the falls. It's from here that you can finally see the full force (and size) of the falls, as well as the remarkable suspension bridge that you will need to cross to get to the other side of the gorge and up to the top of the falls. There is a resting area nearby and anyone not wanting to tackle the bridge and stairs can relax here and just enjoy the view. This is also the spot where climbers gather to prepare to climb the via ferrata up the left side of the falls.
After viewpoint #2 the path switchbacks up to the suspension bridge, a 264' (80m) long marvel that is not simply a way to get across the gorge to the falls, but is stepped so you go up as well as across. At the upper end you'll reach viewpoint #3 which is guaranteed to get you soaked from the spray. From here you can also look up and see the final viewpoint (#5), a small platform jutting out over the brink of the falls.
To get there you must climb up higher using a set of suspended stairways. From viewpoint #4 you can see the full force of the water as it plunges downward. Once at the top, a short path leads to platform #5. It's amazing the rather small brook you cross can become such a raging waterfall once it reaches the edge. There is also a great view down towards the suspension bridge.
You return to the Bischofsplatz parking lot the same way you came up. However, once at the top there is also a path to the nearby village of Niederthai. It's possible you could get a ride back down from there, or even have arranged for a pickup. As mentioned, the Niederthierstrasse continues past the Bischofsplatz up to Niederthai, so it's possible to do the hike in reverse, starting at the top.
Along the path to the falls are several stops encouraging hikers to do breathing exercises. Later we read that a University study had found that people, especially those with asthma, could greatly increase their lung function by breathing in air near a waterfall. An hour at the Stuibenfall was recommended. If you do this full hike to the top of the falls and back, we also recommend a well-deserved massage at the Aqua Dome thermal spa in nearby Langenfeld.
