点评:One of the more interesting Hawaiian combination of historic/natural sights isflat the Waipio Valley. On the north tip of the Big Island, the rain-soaked windward side has produced a couple of erosion valleys. The largest of which is the beautiful Waipio Valley which is this wide flat valley carved between the cliff plateaus of the Big Island. The combination produces a beautiful, expansive black sand beach framed by sheer cliffs on either side. It is impressive and beautiful.
The geologic oddity has long been an important home site for the native Hawaiians, including Kamehameha's childhood home. The valley can only be visited by native Hawaiians and those on permitted tours. However, at the entrance to the valley is an overlook with parking from which you can see the beauty of the location.
We visited as part of a morning tour on our last day in Hawaii before an afternoon flight after seeing Akaka Falls. The two visits can easily be combined as they are only 42 miles apart on the northeast side of the Big Island. The parking lot is not big but there were spaces when we arrived. The visit to the overlook is fairly quick so a space is likely to open quickly. The visit was free and fairly quick but beautiful and nice to see.
