点评:We have enjoyed decades of visiting the Downtown Cabaret Theatre in Bridgeport, Connecticut. With a lively cabaret style setting and slate of good theatrical performances, it was on our "must do" agenda several times a year. We saw countless plays, children's performances, and musicals. Unfortunately, times have changed and appears that the cabaret will be closing its door and dropping the curtain for good.
A lot of the chatter blames the closure on patron decline after Covid and on the sale of the building hosting the theatre (which resulted in a rent increase). Personally, having attended since the 1980's I think much of the blame lies with changes that the Cabaret made themselves. Community actors (bank tellers, grocery clerks, accountants) that you knew from the area had a chance to highlight their other skills and talents. Somewhere along the way, it was decided that members of the actors guild needed to be included which came with a pay scale and higher ticket prices. At the same time, that which made the theatre enjoyable (aka theatrical shows) started to disappear. Regularly, you could count on a performance year that included a drama, a comedy, a musical, a classic, etc. Over the past few years, however, the Cabaret has fallen in love with tribute bands and have limited their main stage productions to two a year. Personally, if I want to hear a tribute band, I will go to any town green over the Summer and am sure to find a full schedule.
It was good while it lasted and I am happy that it was part of our lives for almost 50 years.
