点评:This Cistercian abbey founded in 1114 is close to the Burgundy canal and the Yonne. It stands alone in a field outside the town of Pontigny and looks very impressive. The interior is very austere with white undecorated walls, high ceilings and clear glass windows. There is some decorative woodwork and rood screen that I think was added later. I stamped across the field to try to get some of the beautiful pictures I had seen but I wasn't as successful.
It is open every day from 10 am to 6:30 pm but on the day we visited it was closing early at 5 pm because of a concert. We automatically paid an entrance fee but was then told later that visiting the church alone is actually free and the fee is only if you have a guided or audio tour. One of us took the audio tour but the rest of us didn't. Aside from the church we also visited the unimpressive gardens (which does incur a fee) and monastic buildings whose purpose I am unclear about. There was no handouts that explained the layout or the history of the Abbey. There is a café restaurant and souvenir shop with lots of wines. Easy and free car parking nearby.
