点评:On the morning of our visit to the forest, my niece sent me a link to the Hoia Baciu Forest episode of the Morbid podcast, which she had listened to earlier just by chance. My bf and I listened to it before we set out for the forest that afternoon. The podcast ladies mentioned that visitors to the forest experienced disorientation, paranoia, and other extreme psychological reactions. I felt a bit apprehensive about going, but I was still looking forward to this. I had read about the forest many years ago, and this was one of my life-long travel goals.
There are no official entrances into the forest. Google Maps is a bit hazy on how to get there. As far as I know, there are two entrances. The first one we tried was on the south side through a grass and shrubbery strewn dirt lane leading up into the hills. It was very hot. We had no idea where we were going, and there was no one around. We could see animals huddled in the shrubbery with their backs to us. Sheep, maybe? I was getting seriously freaked out. I kept getting a Texas Chainsaw Massacre vibe because of the dried grass and shrubbery landscape, the heat, and the isolation. I was thinking that perhaps I just reacting to the podcast's description and the solitude.
The lane was very bumpy. Our vehicle was having a hard time getting in and out of the potholes. One of the reviewers on Google said they abandoned their car because of the potholes and walked about 30 minutes to reach the forest. I didn't want to do that because of the weird looking animals, the isolation, and because we were relying on good faith. Plus I felt so paranoid.
We decided to go to the Ethnographic Museum entrance on the north side. This lane went through the forest itself, with plenty of shade, fellow hikers, and we also were able to drive quite a distance into the forest. We asked a few hikers how to get to the area where the sinewy trees were and the clearing. They told us. They also told us that there was nothing eerie about the areas we wanted to see. We got out of the vehicle and ended up walking for about an hour. It was beautiful and peaceful on this side.
On our way back, the sun was going down. The forest grew gloomy. Very atmospheric.
There is a shorter way down back to town, but it would be difficult to use this shortcut to enter into the forest because it was very steep and narrow.
I'd recommend the hike. I ended up loving it
