点评:Hike was done in early January 2025 independently as 2 foreigners who knew zero Korean, without joining any paid package.
To hike on Seongpanak trail, one needs to make a reservation online with the Hallasan National Park ahead of the hike. The National Park limits the number of people per day on the trail and they are serious about enforcing it. So be sure to reserve early.
Hikers will need to go to a kiosk at the visitor centre to print out a qr-code using the reservation number that was emailed to the registered email address. With that printed qr-code, hikers will go to the gantry where the trail starts and a staff will ask for photo ID to match the name on the print-out. After that ID check, another staff will scan the qr-code. That's when the hike commenced.
Knowing that there was limited parking lots, we drove in early and arrived at 545am when there were still ample lots available. But only started the hike at 620am as we had some issues with printing our qr-code due to us not being able to read Korean (at the kiosk).
As the sun was not out yet, the initial stage of the hike was in the dark. Therefore, be equipped with headlamps/torches. We brought our headlamps but forgotten the batteries. So we relied on our handphone's torchlight.
The trail was a comfortable gentle climb at the initial stretch. Half an hour into the hike, we had to put on our crampons (for the entire hike) as the ground was covered with slippery compacted snow.
The hike is quite physically demanding as the ascent was pretty steep for most part. The view was impressive, as one stood above the clouds, on the highest spot of Jeju island, watching its different forms and movements.
The trail was very clear and well marked at intervals. Fellow hikers were aplenty along the hike. So there was no worries about being alone if in trouble.
We started the hike at 620am and we're back down at the start point by 2pm. With 2 breaks during the hike and spent 1 hour at the summit q-ing to take photo with "the rock".
Great trail to hike. Highly recommend it.
