Jurassic Park Meets Reality: A Visit to Komodo Island

点评：Loh Liang National Park on Komodo Island had been on our bucket list for years, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. The water surrounding the island was unbelievably clear, with shades of blue that looked even better in person than they did in photos.
Walking down the long, narrow pier toward the island, with the rugged hills rising in the background, immediately reminded me of Jurassic Park. Once inside the park, though, I was surprised to learn that people also live on the island. It creates a unique setting where the local community and the famous Komodo dragons share the same environment.
The dragons were, of course, the main reason we came, and seeing them up close was an unforgettable experience. Every group is accompanied by a local ranger carrying the traditional forked wooden stick used for safety. Our ranger was knowledgeable, answered plenty of questions, and pointed out things we would have missed on our own. Learning about the dragons' hunting behavior, territorial habits, and breeding season added much more to the visit than simply seeing them.
One thing that caught me off guard was that parts of the island felt more developed than I expected. There were a few areas with litter, and some souvenir vendors were fairly persistent. It didn't ruin the experience, but it reminded me a little of visiting the Great Pyramid of Giza, where stepping back from the monument reveals the surrounding neighborhoods and changes the sense of being transported to another time. Knowing that beforehand would have helped set my expectations.
Pro Tip: If you make the trip to Komodo Island, I highly recommend joining a multi-island boat tour instead of visiting only Loh Liang. Exploring the surrounding islands turned out to be just as memorable as seeing the dragons. Between the scenic viewpoints, pink sand beaches, snorkeling, and the chance to spot manta rays over healthy coral reefs, the area offers far more than a single stop on Komodo Island.
