点评:It happened fast — it always does. That’s how they work. Distract, confuse then strike…..and vanish.
On this day their execution was perfect.
For the visiting travelers we did know better. We had read the articles, heard the stories. It wasn’t our first rodeo. Yet on this day we were distracted.
Third day of a trip to Chicago although the trip was to the west about 45 minutes (depending upon the traffic that is). The third day was our time to visit the big city.
Looking back now — we were tired and when you are tired you are just tired.
Never been to a downtown architectural river cruise which looked interesting — so we went.
Then you have to park. Seemed to be a facility across the street. We entered though a giant steel door that automatically opened as we drove up. Otherwise the street side was void of people.
An incredibly small garage. Fortunately we had rented a smaller car. Took a while to find a space then logic our way out to the world above. Rest Rooms would have been nice.
In the voluminous lobby of the garage — all gigantic glass windows and white walls, near street level, was a huge desk and a lone attendant. “Are there restrooms?”, I asked. “No” was the answer and nothing else.
Welcome to Chicago.
So out to the street we went. East Wacker Drive is wide and busy. A little ways down was the light and street crossing to enter the Chicago Riverwalk.
Once across— and there were throngs of people crossing with us — we went right to get to the stairway access. Michigan avenue and East Wacker with a "First Lzdy" awning over the entrance.
At this point you are just anticipating getting tickets for the cruise and finding an elusive Chicago rest room and of course we were tired.
That’s when the snakes struck.
And let me say I know better — but this was my off day.
In front of me a man stumbled and there I stopped. From what we can gather accomplice #1 then grabbed my wallet — which I keep in my front left pants pocket. When I confronted the stumbled man who claimed he did not have my wallet, his partner — now in front of us on the stairs — reached down and picked up the wallet from the step in front of us as if it had landed there somehow.
He gave me the wallet which I imagine makes the victim feel like things are all right.
But I immediately checked and knew my primary charge card was gone. In this short time they were gone, the two, plus an additional person that was with them.
Used my credit card app to immediately freeze the card. This was at 3:50 pm.
Found the elusive rest rooms and came back to buy the cruise tickets.
At that time used the app again to order a replacement card and report it was stolen.
Went on the cruise which was excellent but for us the recent encounter took its toll.
Received a text alert I didn’t notice until after the 90 minute cruise — at 4:37 pm that a $3,500 charge at Nordstroms was made — was that mine?
Not me — come to find out the charge was declined and that there was a Nordstroms quite close to where we were. Obviously frequented by pickpockets.
So on this day, in this situation, they pulled off the perfect crime.
Only they had nothing to show for it — no $3,500 item and looking a little stupid to the Nordstroms clerk.
Us extremely shaken from it all. After we took the cruise and visited a few other sites we went back to our hotel ready to get home the next day.
Future trips to visit? Maybe after we prepare - make sure you are alert and aware for your trip!
