点评:Review of Gheluvelt Park, Barbourne, North Worcester
Four years since the first review of Gheluvelt Park – focused mainly on the historical origins of the park, the facilities available and the pleasure to be gained when spending time there – the park as a traditional park. The modern park, however, is essentially in two parts - the eastern half a place of pleasure for families, for socializing with others, sharing civic resources and, importantly, providing an opportunity in which to escape into the space around you – the raison d'être of a traditional urban park. The western half of the park, however, has been tasked with helping people to better focus upon their place in the ecology of the natural world/local countryside/wildlife around them.
Since 2024 there has been this prestigious new bridge spanning the River Severn and linking the two distinctive parts of the park, respectively, people and wildlife on both sides of the river. The 145 m long bridge dominates the skyline just about everywhere you are in the park with the single cable stayed pylon reaching to the heavens*. Sit outside the Pump House & Environmental Centre (ex-municipal waterworks) with a cappuccino in hand (or an ice cream cone should you prefer one) and the Kepax Bridge captures the eye. The bridge connects the park to St. Johns an outlying western suburb of the city.
If the bridge is new to you – as it was to us – then you should take the opportunity to walk or bike across it - that’s what you do with bridge - investigate, take time to hang over the rail at mid-point to watch the flow of the water below, examine the houses alongside the riverbank and then wander back into the park. Those familiar with the bike trails and footpaths around Worcester will see the similarity of design with the Sabrina and Diglis Bridges further downstream.
And that name: Kepax? During the 19th C. there was a ferry operated by the Family Kepax in Barbourne that used to carry people across the river at a point about 150 m north of the now defunct Waterworks Building, where the original family cottages remain. Contemporary reporting suggests that the ferry was popular during Victorian & Edwardian times for people strolling the riverside meadows for pleasure.
The Kepax Bridge was opened in Dec24 and, by June26, an estimated half million people had used it. Put this into the context of Worcester and a resident population currently estimated at 197,000 indicating, as it does, the popularity of the new bridge for walkers and bikers. In 2025 the bridge was selected for the prestigious ‘Project of the Year’ by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association Midlands Awards. It also won a Structural Steel Design Award.
The exploration of the bridge complete, return to the park and follow the Barbourne Brook upstream and across the western part of the park and into the original ceremonial/heritage park to the east. Here the brook is channelled at the rear of the houses in Waterworks Road and crossed by a couple of footbridges – one each side of the duck pond that dominates the centre of the park. There’s a shallow weir below the Swan Bridge as the brook exits the pond. On a small island in the pond there’s a heritage band stand – also linked by a footbridge. Read the current notices at the time of the visit (02Aug26) and two weeks hence an ‘Appreciation of the Beatles’ celebration was scheduled (16Aug26) – two and half hours of songs/music/lyrics/memories courtesy of a popular local DJ/Entertainer. The most successful musical group of the modern era revolutionized popular music on the basis of their artistic/musical skills, technical innovation and, not least, their engaging/effervescent and respective individual personalities. The music/memories of those times continue to impact those people of a particular age.

*The bridge has an unusual design starting with a shallow rising slope parallel to the River Severn in Gheluvelt Park before turning 90 deg. to cross the river. The single steel pylon is located at this point with cables supporting the 4 m wide steel deck. The central span is 60 m wide and sufficient to accommodate the river in seasonal flood. The deck slopes down to ground level on the west bank past the point where seasonal flooding occurs. Residential housing in St Johns is 500 m from the bridge.
