点评:Railroad Square is the most old-fashioned part of downtown Santa Rosa, which has suffered the least from post-WWII redevelopment, and thus retains much of its old charm and character.
Many of the buildings dates from the years immediately following the 1906 ("San Francisco") earthquake, with demolished most of downtown Santa Rosa. Accordingly many buildings here date from 1906-1915, some with the dates visible on them. It also includes one of the few surviving commercial buildings predating the earthquake, a stone building to the south of the railroad depot.
The area focuses on the stone Northwestern Pacific Railroad, currently housing an informative visitor centre, and the adjacent park, Depot Park. This is also the location of the current passenger station for the local passenger light rail system, SMART, which operates through Sonoma and Marin Counties, connecting the towns along the rail and Hwy 101 corridor. It is thus fairly easy to get to and from this area by rail from the towns along the corridor, without having to drive, and the train trip is swift and pleasant.
To the south of the current depot is another, essentially Mission Revival building (currently Chevy's restaurant) with "Santa Rosa" on a grill in front. This was the depot and train shed for the Petaluma & Santa Rosa Railroad, a local electric railway which operated in the first half of the 20th century. It connected Petaluma, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, and nearby rural communities, and hauled farm goods as well as passengers, with a connection to paddle-wheel steamboats which sailed between Petaluma and San Francisco. That system is long gone, but the stations here, Petaluma (a simple wood building near the river) and the stone building in Sebastopol remain.
The depot and the area around it also are iconic for the important scenes in Alfred Hitchcock's 1943 film, Shadow of a Doubt. That film was set and filmed in Santa Rosa. It is here that Uncle Charlie (Joseph Cotton) arrives in town by train, and it is here where the climax later takes place.
The area consists of several streets along a few blocs on the western side of Hwy 101. It includes several hotels, including the charming historic Hotel La Rose, a rough stone building with a staircase formerly from San Francisco. There are numerous restaurants, antique shops, and other shops in the area as well. One can access it from the main part of downtown on foot but must walk through or around the unfortunately placed Santa Rosa Plaza shopping mall.
