Delightful old building
Philipsburg Courthouse的点评
点评：Wednesday 4th February we were exploring and sightseeing in Philipsberg, the capital of Saint Martin. There are a number of versions of the spelling of the Capital, in Dutch and French.
As we walked along Front Street we spotted this delightful old building. Due to it’s design and structure it did stand out as very different from the more modern style buildings around it.
It was built in 1793 as a fire station, since then it has many other uses which include a post office, jail and finally the Courthouse. It's structure and design have also been transformed through the years, the last one was in 1966 when it obtained it's current shape.
The two storey building was built in the Dutch colonial style, which is topped with a cupola and bell and clock tower. At the time of our visit the clock was telling the correct time.
Underneath the clock there is a crest mounted on the wall, the contains a drawing of the Courthouse.
The exterior of the building is cladded in a wooden shingle which is painted white, while the window shutters and edges are painted dark green.
Sitting on the highest point of the tower is a golden coloured pineapple.
Standing in the gardens in front of the building is the bust of the African Queen Oualichi.
The flag of Saint Martin flies from a flagpole in the garden at the front of the Courthouse. This building is one a handful of buildings that feature on a national flag.
